5 Things to Know About the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show

This March 13-15, an international community of orchid growers and enthusiasts will converge at the Earl Warren Showgrounds for the 75th Annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show. Here are five things to expect at one of the top orchid shows in the world!

There Will Be Lots of Exhibits and Demonstrations

Named “one of the top orchid shows in the world” by the Los Angeles Times, the Santa Barbara Orchid Show is known for its stunning exhibits, orchid-inspired art, floral arrangements and interesting demonstrations. Visitors have the chance to travel through a world of displays, each featuring their own unique orchid species. But, many of these flowers aren’t just for admiring – expect a wide variety of orchids available for purchase as well!

Tickets Are Under $20

Daily general admission to the Orchid Show is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and students and free for children ages 12 and under. Visitors can purchase tickets online in advance (avoid the long lines) or at the box office on any day of the event. If you want to take your time exploring all the show has to offer, opt for a 3-Day Pass. It’s $22 for adults and $18 for seniors and students.

There’s An After-Dark Show

Along with the main event, this year’s Orchid Show will also feature a special mini event on Mar 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. called Orchids After Dark. Throughout the evening, visitors can meet the Grand Marshall, peruse the show without the crowds and take photos of exhibits while also enjoying food, drink and entertainment. Tickets to Orchids After Dark are $35 for adults and $20 for students.

It’s Been Around Since the 1900s

An interest in orchids first peaked in Santa Barbara in the early 1900s, when wealthy industrialists traveled to the area’s spas and resorts to escape harsh winters. Many of these visitors eventually turned into residents, building impressive estates and hiring world-class horticulturists to design their elaborate gardens filled with (you guessed) gorgeous orchids. Exotic orchid varieties grew in popularity and inspired the first Orchid Show, organized in 1945. Over the years, the show has grown into one of the top orchid shows in the world.
